The twelve inch wide disc format, which resembles an obese CD, first saw the light of day in 1978 under the name DiscoVision, and was technically superior to the two competing formats of the time; VHS and Betamax.
Best known among cinephiles as collectors items and the only professional and representative home video format of the day with both great sound and image. LaserDisc was able to present films in their original uncut widescreen aspect ratio, all without the use of the controversial pan & scan technique.
But the price of this superior AV experience was too overwhelming for the regular consumer and the format remained obscured throughout most of the world until its discontinuation in 2001.
Time has not been kind to the LaserDisc medium neither, which these days has become a particularly endangered species of disc. This is due to a phenomenon which these days are every collector of physical media worst nightmare; "Disc rot". A degeneration process where the contents of the discs literally rot away and disappear into oblivion.
Club Laser therefore sees it as its most important task to spread the awareness of this overlooked and truly amazing format. And enjoy the many fantastic titles that LaserDisc has to offer while it is still playable.
Club Laser will curate LaserDisc movie screenings from the club’s ever-expanding archive that includes everything from movie history classics to obscure arthouse and mainstream action entertainment!
